A performer, choreographer and teacher, Julia Chacón studied ballet extensively at the Phoenix School of Ballet, where she was exposed to Spanish dance. By age 16 she was performing flamenco professionally with Artes Bellas, directed by Lydia Torea. Julia attended the University of New Mexico where she trained in flamenco with Eva Enciñas-Sandoval and in modern dance with Bill Evans. She received her BFA in dance magna cum laude. She went on to continue her flamenco studies in Madrid, Spain at Amor de Dios: Centro de Arte Flamenco y Danza Española in the years 1999 – 2000.

 

Julia has danced flamenco professionally with María Benítez Teatro Flamenco (Santa Fe), Amaya, Flamenco Sín Límites (Boston), Arizona Opera, Artes Bellas (Phoenix), and Mosaico Flamenco (Scottsdale), with whom she still performs. Other performance highlights include Flamenco Vivo’s “Federico,” with Miguel Angel Rojas and Carlos Rodriguez, and Festival Flamenco’s “Fiesta Flamenca.”

 

Julia has performed in Spain, Mexico, and throughout the United States. An accomplished choreographer and director, her choreography has been featured in Savor y Ritmo in Los Angeles, and in Yaelisa’s Emerging Choreographers Showcase in San Francisco. She created three pieces for award winning, Moving Company out of Scottsdale, and her self-produced concerts in New Mexico and Arizona have met with high acclaim.

 

Her teaching credentials are varied and include the dance program of New School for the Arts- a visual and performing arts high school in Arizona; Harvard University’s dance program in Cambridge, MA*; and the Institute for Spanish Arts in Santa Fe. In addition, she has written for FlamencoUSA Publication, a magazine dedicated to fostering support of flamenco in the United States.

 

She is most influenced by maestro El Ciro, Manuel Reyes, Belen Maya and Rafaela Carrasco. Domestic influences include Eva Enciñias-Sandoval, Lydia Torea, Omayra Amaya, and Bill Evans. In addition to her BFA in dance Julia also was awarded a BS in anthropology from the University of New Mexico.
